Waxman, Solicitor GeneralThe United States became a party to this case when the district court ruled the provision of the Violence Against Women Act allowing women to sue their sexual assaulters for damages in Federal court. It, along with Christy Brzonkala, appealed both the district court’s and, later, the Fourth Circuit’s decisions. Seth P. Waxman was nominated to be Solicitor General by President Clinton on September 17, 1997, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November. He is a 1977 graduate of Yale Law School.
