Myanmar, also known as Burma, is located in a part of Asia that
is rich in natural resources and economic potential. For more than five
decades, however, the country has suffered from a political and
economic crisis that has alienated it from the international community
and turned it into one of the world’s poorest nations.
The British granted Burma independence in 1947, but in 1962,
communist General Ne Win staged a coup, banned political opposition,
suspended the constitution, and introduced “the Burmese way of
