Italy joined the International Whaling Commission in 1998, although it had been attending meetings since 1994 as an observer. It is a cosponsor of the Berlin Initiative, which would create a new committee on the IWC devoted to whale conservation. Giuseppe Ambrosio was appointed on January 1, 2002. The following is excerpted from Italy’s opening statement at the Berlin meeting of the IWC on June 16, 2003.
