Italy joined the International Whaling Commission in 1998, although it had been attending meetings since 1994 as an observer. It is a cosponsor of the Berlin Initiative, which would create a new committee on the IWC devoted to whale conservation. Giuseppe Ambrosio was appointed on January 1, 2002.
