Cuba joined the United Nations on October 24, 1945. Cuba last served on the Commission on Human Rights from 1989 to 2006. It is a candidate in the May 9, 2006, elections to serve on the Human Rights Council. Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz has served as Cuba’s permanent representative to the UN since December 21, 2005.
