Senator Mikulski was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986. She was a social worker with the Baltimore Department of Social Services from 1965 to 1970, a member of the Baltimore City Council from 1971 to 1976, and a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1976 to 1986. She serves on the Appropriations Committee (and chairs the Subcommittee on VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies within that committee), and the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (and chairs the Aging Subcommittee within that committee).
