Mr. Waxman was nominated to be Solicitor General by President Clinton on September 17, 1997, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November. Named Assistant Solicitor General in October 1996, he had been Acting Solicitor General since September 1, 1997. From April through July 1997, he was also Acting Deputy Attorney General.
