On September 20, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new Clean Air Act standards designed to reduce carbon pollution from new coal- and gas-fired power plants by requiring the plants to install new technology to capture and store carbon emissions. New large natural gas plants would need to meet a limit of 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) per megawatt hour. The limit for new small natural gas plants would be 1,100 pounds of CO2 per megawatt hour.
