Following the 2020 decennial national census, the Louisiana legislature began the process of redrawing its congressional district maps to account for changes in the state’s population. Its first effort was challenged by a group of Black voters who alleged the maps violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) by not affording them the opportunity to have adequate representation in Congress. A federal judge agreed and ordered the legislature to redraw its maps, which it did in 2024.
