Brazil joined the International Whaling Commission in 1950. Once a major whaling power, the nation banned all whale hunting in its territorial waters in 1987. Since 2000, it has been pushing for a new whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic. Counsellor Hadil da Rocha Vianna was appointed on February 2, 2000.
