Mexico is a cosponsor of the Berlin Initiative, which would create a new committee on the International Whaling Commission (IWC) devoted to whale conservation. The Gulf of California, on Mexico’s western coast, is an important whale sanctuary and whalewatching destination, where migrating gray whales meet in the winter to breed. Mexico joined the IWC in 1949. Ambassador Andres Rozental was appointed on March 20, 2001.
