Senator Murkowski was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980. He served as Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Economic Development from 1966 to 1970 and was President of the National Bank of Alaska from 1971 to 1980. He chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and is a member of the Senate Finance Committee. He also serves on the Indian Affairs and Veterans Affairs Committees.
