On Jan. 20, 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order asserting that, beginning in 30 days, all children born to undocumented migrants or individuals in the United States on a temporary basis should not be granted U.S. citizenship. The president’s action reversed a longstanding U.S. practice of automatically granting citizenship to children born on U.S. soil with only a few exceptions. After several federal courts issued injunctions stopping the policy change from being implemented, the Supreme Court in Trump v. CASA (2025) ruled that such “universal injunctions” were improper.
