Peter Gartlan, Counsel of RecordEarly in the morning of December 18, 1999, the Medford, Oregon, police responded to an emergency call that an individual was threatening his girlfriend with a gun. When they arrived on the scene, they found a heavily intoxicated Moises Sanchez-Llamas armed with a handgun. According to police, Sanchez-Llamas fired his weapon at an officer, wounding him in the leg. He was then subdued, handcuffed, and arrested. At the police station, officers learned that Sanchez-Llamas was a Mexican national who spoke little English. He was informed of his Miranda rights and, under interrogation, made several incriminating statements….
