Croatia signed the Mine Ban Treaty on December 4, 1997, and completed the destruction of its stockpile of 199,003 antipersonnel mines in October 2002. Ivan Šimonovic has served as Croatia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations since February 1997. He was president of the UN Economic and Social Council in 2002. The following is excerpted from Ambassador Šimonovic’s address to the UN General Assembly on November 21, 2001.
